Window 7 is here! The long awaited "upgrade" that will hopefully perform better than Windows Vista. Here is my experience of Windows 7 vs Vista.
Let’s have a look at Windows Vista first. When it first was released it was probably the biggest nightmare to work with. Being very resource hungry Windows Vista required a powerful machine to work from and even with the recommended specifications the performance was very poor. Then after installation you would realise that none of you input and output devices wants to work. Printers, scanners, webcams and networking devices were sometimes impossible to install. Then came Windows Vista Service Pack 1 - and solve some of the problems. In time the drivers become available and eventually most of the problems had disappeared.
There were three problems that had never got fixed:
1. If you were running Office 2007 - you had to get used to Excel and Outlook
giving you NOT RESPONDING errors very regularly.
2. Windows Vista, for some reason, manage to half the time your laptop's battery
will last compared to Windows XP
3. Windows Vista won the price for the slowest booting/restarting OS software on the
market. You could easily go make yourself a cup of coffee while it boots.
For me I could not wait to see if Windows 7 will be any better. I've been working on Windows 7 now for 3 weeks and... I AM IMPRESSED.
Installation of Windows 7 went extremely smooth. Installation of printers and other devices was a breeze. Networking were easy to setup and the general "feel" of Windows 7 is very good.
So here is my first impression of Windows 7 vs Vista
1. In a period of 3 weeks, I never needed to use the END PROCESS function. I can't
even remember that I've had any NOT RESPONDING applications.
2. My laptop battery definitely last longer than when I was using Windows Vista.
It's still not as good as with Windows XP, but it's an improvement.
3. Never had any problems installing any software. Even our accounting system
(which needed some tweaking in Windows Vista to work) worked instantly after
installation.
4. Then for me the biggest improvement is the boot-up time. Now this is incredible!
My laptop takes about 1 min to complete a full reboot cycle and about 30 seconds
to boot and login. The boot-up time is even better than Windows XP.
So for me - WINDOWS 7 vs VISTA - I choose Windows 7 by a big margin!
Everyone that bought a laptop or PC with Windows Vista and then downgraded to Windows XP... Please do yourself a favour and upgrade to Windows 7.
